KILT MOUSE ANIMATION PART 6 - FINAL

Yay - it's done. Really happy with the ears and hat and other follow through bits. Think it has turned out well. Got a lot more work to do to get the Rod Scribner, Jim Tyer level of animation - but I think I am beginning to understand the squash and stretch and how far you can distort things and get great and exciting movement in the animation.

I will add a little more to the end with the mouth so it moves to the end of the "TRUUUUUUE" word.

Let me know what you think!

Now the real fun part comes!

I get to work on the final keys, make the VERY best drawings I can and really get to see this guy come to life. All very rough, and many changes will be made, especially to the ears and hat and other draggy bits that will have a lot of follow through added at the end.

This is done in what is know as pose to pose animation. I have blocked out the key poses, I get the timing just right and then add the in-betweens. Then at the end I do what is know as a straight ahead pass. This is where I animate the ears, hat, eye balls, skirt etc. All the bits that will have drag and follow through and keep the static poses alive.

KILT MOUSE ANIMATION PART 4

So now that I have my lip sync sorted out and on the expose sheet I can move forward and do the key frames. This is where I start to really look at the arcs in the animation and work hard to get the best possible keys. I will rework this over and over until I am really happy. I re-drew this one about 4 times until it felt right and the keys were really strong.

I will post a video of the keys with the sound track next!

I don't use any software for lip-syc. Much prefer the old fashioned way of just doing it by ear. I have never bothered to use the software like magpie etc. The best animation was never done using that crap, so nor will I!

KILT MOUSE ANIMATION PART 2

So next step is for me to design the mouth shapes for the Mouse character. I always do this with generic mouths so that I can allocate a mouth to each frame. I will then put the right expression on the mouth when in the animation.

Don't really understand this new way of thinking with flash animation. They design maybe 3 different mouth libraries - happy, sad and angry. That’s it! Warners animation (real animation) the mouths would be drawn differently in EVERY scene and EVERY drawing, and it would go with the expression. Not just stock happy, stock sad, and stock angry, but every emotion. That’s why old animation is good and new animation is not.

I will try and upload a clip of the mouths to the sound track for you to see.
